Weight is the least understood part of dumpster rental, and it's where the surprise charges live at companies that like fine print. We'd rather explain the whole thing in plain English, because a customer who understands the scale ticket never gets surprised by one.
What "Tons Included" Means
Every can we rent includes disposal tonnage in the flat rate: 2 tons with the 10-yard, 3 tons with the 15 and 20-yard, 4 tons with the 30. That's the weight of debris your rental already covers. A ton is 2,000 pounds, so a 20-yard rental includes 6,000 pounds of disposal before anything extra applies.
For perspective, an entire household cleanout, furniture, boxes, the works, usually lands between 1 and 2 tons. General debris is lighter than it feels when you're carrying it. Most rentals never approach their limit, and most customers pay exactly the posted rate and nothing more.
The Scale Ticket Is the Referee
When we haul your can, the landfill weighs the load and prints a scale ticket. That ticket is the whole system. Under your included tonnage, done, nothing changes. Over it, the charge is $70 per additional ton, calculated off the ticket's exact number. A load that runs 500 pounds over pays for a quarter ton, not a rounded-up full one. We didn't invent the weight; the scale did, and you're welcome to see the ticket.
The Materials That Actually Hit the Limit
Weight problems come from density, not volume, and the repeat offenders are predictable. Roofing shingles, at 7 or 8 squares per ton. Mortar-bed tile floors in older Greenwood and Abbeville houses. Plaster walls. Water: wet carpet and rain-soaked debris weigh dramatically more than dry, which is why tarping an open can before a storm is worth thirty seconds.
And the two materials that out-weigh everything, concrete and dirt, can't ride in our cans at all for now. Our current trucks can't legally haul a box of either. That changes when the triaxle trucks arrive, but today it's the one hard no.
Size for Weight, Not Just Space
Here's the counterintuitive part: a heavy project sometimes wants a bigger can even when the debris would physically fit in a smaller one, because the bigger can carries more included tonnage. Three tons of tile fits in a 10-yard by volume, but it blows past that can's 2-ton allowance. In the 15 or 20, the same load rides inside the included weight.
