Go in order of least sentiment. The garage, the shed, and the attic first, because they're full of easy decisions: the broken, the duplicate, the mystery cords. Then closets and the kitchen's gadget drawer. Bedrooms and anything with photos in it last, if at all; a move is a bad week for emotional sorting, and boxes of memories can just move.
Donate as you go. Furniture and clothes in good shape can hit a donation pickup before the can fills, saving space for the genuinely done. And keep a "sell maybe" pile only if you'll actually list it this week. A maybe pile that sits is just packing you postponed.
What the Movers Won't Take Anyway
Here's the part people find out too late: moving companies refuse a whole category of stuff. Propane tanks, gas cans, paint, chemicals, most anything flammable or leaky. Half of that can't go in our can either, wet paint, oil, and batteries stay out, so plan a county drop-off run for the hazardous shelf in the garage.
